This Just In: Reddit MRAs don’t know crap about rape prevention, but still have strong opinions about it

So over on the Men’s Rights subreddit, the top post at the moment (with more than 370 net upvotes) is a link to this image:

If I might hazard a guess: that’s because IT HAS YOU NUMBSKULLS.

Sigh. Let’s look at a little chart showing the striking decline in the incidence of rape we’ve seen in the last 30 years.

rapedecline

This is based on data from the National Crime Victimization Survey. Some have criticized the survey’s methodology and say that it undercounts the incidence of rape, but even if that is true, the trend is clear: Rape has declined significantly over the past three decades, and I think it’s fairly obvious that increased awareness and understanding of rape, largely the result of feminist anti-rape campaigns, has contributed significantly to this decline.

Naturally, those who tried to point this out in r/mensrights found themselves downvoted.

Just a rant and it seems the best place in the most recent threads:

I have a pal from high school who posted a problematic sign about DV from something called Sick Humor. It was vile and victim blaming. Well I called him out on it, yet he claims since everyone he knows thinks it is funny, he was going to delete all my naysaying.

I ultimately deleted my posts but sent him a pointed PM saying that it is quite clear why what he posted was not funny. Here is example A. And since there are over 124 people on his friends list, he probably knows at least one person who is a victim of DV. Maybe they would think it is funny but good grief, why is it that people still think it is hiiiiisterical to make fun of victims?

AAARGH! And this has been my rant of the day. Thank you for listening and pick up a cookie from the microwave (protection from the kitties) on your way on to the next post.

Your rant is a good cause of ranting, and kittehs and cookies are always good (well, except when the kitteh is a trap…”she no trap, she kitteh” — my brother)

Princessbonbon, thanks for standing up to your pal. It’s hard to speak up sometimes, but it makes it easier for the next person to do so, and so the momentum builds.

And I’ll take one of those cookies, thank you! (I keep mine in the toaster oven so the kittehs don’t get them, or wrap them in aluminum foil.)

Princessbonbon: Standing up is hard, esp. when it’s in a community you like, or people you are close to/friends with.

Hey Kittehs! You’re in Australia, right? Random question: what time is the sun setting this time of year where you’re at? It’s for a story thing.

In Melbourne it’s setting around 8.45 at the moment. 🙂 Would you like a link for reference?

Thanks-I am worried about the job but you know, if I have to take my lumps, I think it is worth it.

At least the other issue I was dealing with has kind of half assedly gone away. Time for a Mel Brooks Marathon!

RE: kittehs

No worries, just checking. Writing a story in an alternate dimension of New Zealand, wanted a quick memory brush-up for what general time of day the sun set during summer.

Gotcha. I just looked out of curiosity at NZ – Auckland’s the same as us, Wellington about nineish. So yeah, all pretty similar.

‘Course we’re on CeilingCatAccursed daylight saving at present, so it’s really only 7.45 here. Do they use daylight saving in NZ or are they sensible?

I have a position where taking a strong stance on anything can cause problems.

Concerning the case in India, I found a comment in the Spiegel in which an indian activist remarked that what she thinks makes this case spin is that a group of underclass men raped a middle class woman.

@Princes Bonbon – Good for you. The more people that stand up to this shit, the more people will be inclined to follow your example. I have done this quite a few times recently in relation to rape jokes (or worse, a complete cotton-headed-ninny-muggins who said to his thousands to twitter-people “you know that girl that everyone knows who has been raped? Well I don’t believe the c**t, Acting like it gives her some respect in a room”). *shudder*

And it sucks that you are usually the one that feels crappy after such exchanges (like really? I should feel bad for saying “please do not mock rape victims”?). But there will be people that will see you standing up, and may think a bit more deeply, and even be the one to call someone out in future.

P.s. : Re above cotton-headed-ninny-muggins – he is v difficult to stand up to as he is a rapper with many little fanboys and girls. I usually get abuse for being the one to say ‘not cool’. I am, however, methodically getting screenshots of every scrap of misogyny and rape-apologism that he spouts out of his self-important word hole, and I WILL take him down some day. I’m thinking massive posters containing every shitty horrible thing he has said, posted all around the places he has gigs. And that’s just for starters.
