Life Before Feminism: Playing "Old Maid"

Damn her and her high IQ!

Sometimes it’s useful to remember just what the early second wave feminists were reacting against. Here, from a comic circa 1970 (judging from the clothing) is a sort of double-whammy of misogyny: hide your smarts, girls, or you’ll end up a wizened old maid at the ripe old age of … twenty?

The MRAs today who prattle on about how declining marriage rates mean that men are wising-up to the evils of feminism need to remind themselves that delaying marriage is a good thing for both men and women (the earlier the marriage, the greater the likelihood of divorce; the later the marriage, the more time for men and women to get decent education, start a career, mature a bit, etc etc). In the fifties, obviously, the pressure for women (and to a lesser degree, men) to marry very young was immense. This comic suggests that these pressures didn’t vanish with the coming of the sixties counterculture or even with the first stirrings of second wave feminism.

Comic from Comically Vintage.

Yeah, us with our silly “census” and our silly “CDC”, always just saying what we want to hear.

Obviously http://www.holocaust-deniers.net would be a way better source.

Katz, the “census” is nothing but another tool of the Jews — sorry, Illuminati. Why should Slavey pay any mind to it?

To bring stuff slightly back on topic, I am also glad that I’ve been exposed to ideas of living with someone long term *besides* marriage. I’ve had a better time living with “family of choice” than I had living with my relatives or alone. A friend of mine lives as part of a leather family, and another is starting their own household around a poly triad. There’s more than one way to have stability in your home life.

Re: old maids in general.

I remember that one of my classmates did not even come to our 20th high school reunion because she was afraid she’d be the only one who wasn’t married. There was a lot of pressure in small town Idaho to get married right after high school or, at best, go to college to meet better men.

As a confirmed old maid, spinster, crone, never wanted to get married, never did, never would (my partnership is not a marriage), I had a great time–and some of the most lovely moments were the classmates looking at me and going, wow, you can pretty much do whatever you want, can’t you? (They all having adolescent children, ahdhahahahahah). And me, smug, going YEP.

It’s a bit more complicated now with cats and dogs, and requires some planning.

My father’s family finally gave up nagging me to get married when they got the Ph.D. — I guess it was seen as a “substitute” (in theory, I could support myself and not end up spinster in the attic?).

See NWO… you are a slave to your desires, and your ignorance.

We mock you because you are risible. We don’t say the same things because we are monolithic, but because when we do research, the truth is plain to see.

We have very different ideas about lots of things… things which are matters of opinion (such as the value of engaging with MRAL, and you), but when it comes to data, to testable theories about how things work… well the truth has the problem of disagreeing with you.

So you insult us (by lying to us, as if we were too stupid to spot it), and you try to mock us (by calling us children, and accusing us of groupthink).

And we sigh, and carry on with our lives.

I have a friend (a couple actually) and when they were engaged her mother told her she had to stay in school (this would have been about 1979, more or less) so that when he left her (because that’s what men do), she would be able to support herself.

They’ve been together ever since, but that’s some of what her mother learned, from being married to one of those paragons of “loyalty” in the late forties, early fifties.

Mind you, there wasn’t a divorce recorded, he just abandoned them.

I don’t know why my grandfather and his first wife got divorced, it might be she knew about the affair he had, and the resultant child. That only came to light for the rest of the family about four years ago… which is to say abouy eight years after the fact). His second wife (my grandmother) died, and his third wife survived him.

So… facts, really pesky things. At the individual level they don’t mean much… but when one aggregates them, one can see patterns. Like the steady state for divorce in the past 30 years, (well, down-trending), after new norms from the liberalisation of the laws in the late 60s.

My mother wasn’t able to get credit while she and my father were separated… because she was still married, and without his signature she couldn’t even turn in the application.

If that’s “the good old days” you can keep them.

He didn’t flounce… he just threw a tantrum and went to bed (there to amuse himself until Somnus overtakes him) before he rises to slave away at his job for 14 hours.

Then he will be back to “school” us on how the world really works.
