Above, the unintentionally ironic MRA meme of the week, courtesy of A Voice for Men’s Facebook page, their main distribution center for unintentionally ironic and otherwise terrible memes. I’m not sure what specific week this is the ironic meme for, given that Emma Watson’s speech to the UN took place last September and this meme was posted on Facebook only this week, but just roll with it, people!
So what exactly makes this meme ironic? Well, for starters, Watson didn’t actually say the words in question or otherwise order men to talk to women about their feelings.
What she said was a good deal more subtle. She started by saying that one of the things that led her to embrace feminism was her realization, at age 18, that “my male friends were unable to express their feelings.” Then she went on to talk in more detail about the ways breaking down gender stereotypes helps to free, well, everyone.
We don’t often talk about men being imprisoned by gender stereotypes but I can see that they are and that when they are free, things will change for women as a natural consequence.
If men don’t have to be aggressive in order to be accepted women won’t feel compelled to be submissive. If men don’t have to control, women won’t have to be controlled.
Both men and women should feel free to be sensitive. Both men and women should feel free to be strong… It is time that we all perceive gender on a spectrum not as two opposing sets of ideals.
If we stop defining each other by what we are not and start defining ourselves by what we are—we can all be freer and this is what HeForShe is about. It’s about freedom.
The big irony here? This is exactly what a real Men’s Rights movement should be promoting, not raging against.
Adding to the irony, whoever made this meme made clear that they aren’t just unwilling to listen to women’s feelings; they’re unwilling to listen to a woman’s logical argument. Which is why they simplified her comments and distorted their meaning.
But what wins this meme the grand prize for irony this week is meme maker’s assertion that “WE DON’T NEED OR WANT TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT OUR FEELINGS.”
Really? Because in fact MRA dudes and MGTOWs and the rest of their ilk talk about their feelings constantly, and loudly — with anyone willing to listen and some who aren’t.
Sure, it’s true that most MRA dudes and their ideological soulmates don’t like to talk about their feelings of sadness or anxiety or insecurity or doubt. You know, the sorts of feelings it would be good for most of these guys to explore and understand and, when possible, get past.
But they love, just love, to talk about how angry they are, how angry they think other men are, and how much feminists, and the women of the world generally, are going to suffer if they refuse to listen to angry men and do what they say. Hell, the so-called “father” of Men’s Rights in the UK? A guy who calls himself Angry Harry. (And he more than lives up to the name.)
The cherry on top of this Irony Sundae: the memester’s decision to use a picture of a homeless man to represent a man oppressed by demanding women.
Men don’t become homeless because some evil woman asked them to talk about their feelings. Indeed, given how many homeless people are mentally ill, most homeless men (and women) would benefit from having the opportunity to talk to a trained professional about their feelings and from better mental health services generally. (Not to mention better services for veterans suffering from PTSD and other war-related maladies.)
In the US, many homeless people who are mentally ill were dumped onto the streets by facilities that didn’t have the money to properly care for them; some of the facilities were and are so bad that their former inhabitants actually prefer the streets.
Oh, and one of the main reasons mental health services are so shitty in the US — and why, in particular, so many men are so poorly served? The old-fashioned notion that men “DON’T NEED OR WANT TO TALK … ABOUT OUR FEELINGS.”
So I award AVFM this week’s IRONY AWARD in MEMING, for once again promoting ideas that actually make the world worse for men!
Also men don’t want or need help. With anything. Ever. They did it all themselves. They don’t need nobody. Stop trying to help, how can I be perfectly independent and self-initializing if I share my success with another?!
It’s also a gigantic failure of an attempt to derail the conversation on their parts.
I keep seeing this play out when it comes to talking about things that affect or effect men:
Feminist: “Hey! Let’s talk about how toxic masculinity leads to emotionally stunted men who can only express their feelings through aggression and violence! This is important!”
MRA: “We don’t want to talk about our feelings! Homeless men! THE DRAFT! Unfair Court systems! All women’s fault!”
Feminist: “Uh…well, we can talk about that later, because those are also important issues, but that’s not the topic of discussion right-”
MRA: “All. Women’s. FAULT.”
They seem to think that we’re all terribly narrow-minded and can only care about one thing at a time instead of being complex creatures capable of discussing more than one subject over the course of a conversation, never mind how many we talk about in our lifetimes.
Oh, but I forget: Women aren’t adult people. We’re weird child things that only serve to look pretty and please boners. [/sarcasm]
Okay, dude, but no one is demanding that you talk to women about your scary feelings. Talk to each other! Talk to a therapist (just not one affiliated with AVFM)!
These are the same guys who whine endlessly that society makes them bottle up their feelings. They also rage about male suicide rates but do they see any connection? Noooooo. Shut up, feminists!
Unbelievable, there are feminists including Emma Watson that deeply cares about men and boys and go to great lengths for them and Misogynists Rapey A-holes STILL cry about Misandry.
These photos from their Facebook page is disgusting they even have a photo of that woman who was carrying her mattress around campus to tell others that she has been raped.
https://www.facebook.com/pages/A-Voice-for-Men/102001393188684?sk=photos_stream
And these are the same c*ckbags that whine endlessly about no one takes male rape victims seriously.
They don’t actually want solutions that benefit everybody. They like gender roles the way they are. They just want things to be awesome for men, and still have women as second class citizens who are supposed to be submissive and provide them with sex for such awesomeness as having a job, putting on a shirt, or being nice to women as if they were actually people.
At the very least, from the stuff they say, I believe they’d happily accept the draft, disproportionate homeless and suicide rate if women would just stay in their place.
Men as women’s “personal slaves/cash machines” is more feeling than fact.
Shorter MRA-speak: “Women are such self-centered narcissists, who only think of themselves, and they won’t quit asking me how I feel and asking me if I need someone to talk to about my problems!”
But anger isn’t a feeling. Feelings are for girls and manginas. ANGER IS VERY MANLY AND LOGICAL AND TO BE EXPECTED WHEN BONERS AREN’T PLEASED EVERY SECOND OF THE DAY. IT’S SCIENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I guess time an MRA wanks in here about how feminists are big meanies who don’t have compassion for men and boys, we can just post that meme and say “hey we tried, but you don’t want us to care about your feelings. Shrug.”
And do MRAs really think homelessness is causes by feminism? Do they think it didn’t exist before recent decades? It was a much bigger thing during the gilded era and now. At least now there are some programs, inadequate as they may be. It was a thing before the industrial revolution and before first wave feminism too. Ffs, they used to stuff poor people in dank, dark cells under Glasgow!
That was supposed to be “it was a much bigger thing during the gilded era than now.” Oops.
Women are using that homeless guy as a cash machine?
I thought we were supposed to be all about hypergamy?
It’s interesting how they interpret the freedom to do something as a command to do that thing. “I would like you to be able to talk about your feelings” somehow turns into “You are required to talk about your feelings” somewhere between the ear and the cerebral cortex. It’s like their sensory processors are perpetually malfunctioning.
MRAs have always been proponents of the “Everything not mandatory is prohibited/Everything not prohibited is mandatory” mindset.
I feel bad for the homeless man in this picture, whose very real problems have been usurped by some asshole who honestly doesn’t give two shits about him. Or even one.
Speak for your fucking selves. Sorry but pretending you don’t have emotions does not make you look ‘alpha’. It makes you look immature.
Projection again. They are authoritarians who believe their desires should be forced on everyone else, so of course Emma Watson’s speech is proof that feminists want to shackle men to a chair and force them to tell us their feelings.
Seriously! They have so many memes that include pictures of homeless men that in all likelihood did not give consent to be photographed and put online. Because tourists to cities with high homeless populations like to treat homeless people like they’re zoo animals and stare and take pictures of them. Such compassion for men and boys MRAs have by using their ill gotten photos for their shitty memes!
As I understand it, the MRA argument goes that women are responsible for male homelessness because apparently, the leading cause of homelessness is abusive women and no domestic abuse shelters for men/men being bankrupt from having to pay child support. Or maybe those wars that are women’s fault because women don’t fight in them. Or because all mental illness is caused by women nagging? I guess?
BTW, here’s a feeeemale doing something for homeless men. Probably only because the feminazis haven’t got to her yet…oh wait, I heard about this from a feminist group…

The best solution to homelessness?
Giving people homes.
No, really.
It’s one of those things that is so obvious, you assume that there’s a legitimate reason why that’s not how it’s done. Actually there isn’t one – the reasons against handing homeless people housing are moralistic bullshit that assume that people are homeless through some kind of moral fault. It’s both less expensive and more effective to put people in homes than to leave them homeless.
It only costs a couple of thousand a year to house a homeless person – sometimes less than $10,000 depending on location. I’m sure AVFM could scare that up in just a few days and do at least one small thing to tackle male homelessness.
You know, if they actually cared about homelessness.
Another meme that fails the word count test.
All I can wager is that they’re jealous of support groups and specifically those second-wave feminist consciousness-raising ones.
And this, right here, is what stopped me from giving members of the manosphere/MRA/PUA/Incel/MGTOW/Gamergate or whatever the Hell they want to call themselves this week the benefit of the doubt;
Alright, so these guys complain about how Society doesn’t take the abuse of Men seriously, that it doesn’t take male suicides and male rape victims seriously, that Society expects Men to be predators, to be aggressive, to always make the first move;
At first, I was like, hey, I agree, those are problems! It IS wrong that male abuse victims are ignored, it IS wrong that Men are expected to act like chauvinistic pigs, it IS wrong that it’s seen as ‘weird’ for a man to put on some make-up, be effeminate and wait for Women to approach him rather than the other way around, it IS wrong that Men are expected to treat getting sex like a competition of which man can be ‘the most macho’ rather than a fun consensual activity between two or more people, it IS wrong that Men are looked down upon for talking about their feelings, being sensitive, sad, caring, and cautious, it IS wrong that there are Men out there being abused, neglected, forced into the draft, driven to suicide, and/or being victims of rape and domestic abuse.
Which is why it greatly confuses me when they get pissed off at Feminists like Emma Watson, for, essentially, agreeing with those points. And it’s not just Emma Watson; they find out about some Woman who confesses she likes dick pics, porn, hentai? She’s a slut, and probably objectifying Men. An attractive Woman enjoys the same hobbies that Men do, like video games and playing football, and/or laughs at dirty jokes? She’s fake. A woman says she likes men who are sensitive and nurturing? She’s attacking masculinity, and by extension all Men. A woman dates Men who are shy, geeky and vulnerable? She’s taking advantage of them. A Feminist like Emma Watson speaks out for Men’s Rights? She’s against Men’s Rights.
I can’t believe, I really don’t; it makes me wonder if such people even listen to what Emma Watson said, or if they’re just looking for a reason to be angry. It’d make some kind of sense if a so-called ‘Feminist’ said something hypocritical like ‘I’m okay with Women acting like Men, but Men shouldn’t act like Women,’. I mean, they’re lashing out in cases where THE INDIVIDUAL INVOLVED is explicitly trying to help out! It genuinely frightens me. You’d be expecting them to embrace such people, not angrily shout them down
Apologies for the wall of text. This kind of thing just drives me up the wall.
Tessa, you nailed this! They like toxic masculinity because they don’t see themselves as victims of it, but rather as ‘alphas-in-waiting’. They want a world in which ‘masculine’ qualities like aggression, violence, cool intellect, and pure logic are admired and esteemed, where even a man who isn’t physically strong or attractive or even interesting can still be the hero of his own story and be rewarded with the gorgeous dream girl he believes he’s entitled to. They want a world in which women are like decorative and functional fembots which they can take out and use and then put them away when they’re done.
@Kryst-hla
It’s completely understandable. That’s why this blog exists, because, fuck, there is only so much illogical shit you can read before you just have to pick it apart.
Crap, my blockquoting of Tessa’s statement got all ferkakte. Apologies!
“Then she went on to talk in more detail about the ways breaking down gender stereotypes helps to free, well, everyone.”
That is what they fear most…
