Friday Afternoon Beach Party Super Relax Hour

I love the sound of the ocean. Also looking at the ocean. Probably some of you do as well. So put this on, ignore the big watermark, and just relax the hell out.

Thanks, kupo!

I took three classes of this in college and it all just went right the hell over my head. : /

Plus, I’m trying to figure out how to do this shit with WordPress, which I actually did experiment with in class, but I can’t seem to recall where all that fucking expensive knowledge went.

Whelp.

@Paradoxy;

I’ve always found Bucky with TheNewBoston to be a great teacher for introducing new systems. He’s got a nice casual style and his videos are short, getting right to the point. Good for following along, or you can skip around to places you need.

This might sound daft (I should probably preface all my posts with that) but perhaps people can help me with a thing that’s been bugging me for quite a few years now, and to date no one has come up with a satisfactory answer.

You know in ‘King Kong’ our poor ape friend gets put on display at a big gala event. He then escapes of course. But the thing that’s been puzzling me is this:

Had he not escaped, what was the show going to be?

There’s mention that it’s intended to tell the story of his capture, but that’s pretty much taken care of in that dance routine at the start. So what came next? People were all dressed up and I guess tickets were pretty expensive, so what had they come to see? Surely it wasn’t just a case of staring at a big tied up ape for two hours. Not only is that cruel, it’s pretty poor value for money.

Any ideas?

Cracked actually did a sketch on this exact question, it should be up on their youtube channel.

@Alan
It’s 1933. They have a very large, brutish, darkly pigmented ape chained up. He (as well as the similarly pigmented natives on his island now I look back) is obsessed with a blonde woman. It’s 1933. Yeah…

I imagine they’d have brought out a gorilla tamer to poke and prod him. Punish him. Nobody would say it, but they’d be thinking it. Either he submits to torture (thus proving the audience’s own superiority) or he attacks (thus proving the audience’s own superiority). If you buy your tickets with that kinda baggage, a few hours of an aminal in pain might seem right up your alley. Besides, one rarely watches dangerous acts without hoping, at least a little, that it goes horribly wrong…

That was brilliant! I’m glad to see it’s not just me wondering. Of course they do raise the much better question: why wouldn’t you just bring back a dinosaur? (Although this predates the Jurassic Park craze I suppose)

@ Axe

Hmm, now I’m thinking that the ‘escape’ was part of the plan all along. When I was a kid I went to an exhibition where the ‘gorilla’ (a guy in a suit as it turned out) escaped and it was pretty fun; notwithstanding the health & safety implications of 50 kids trampling each other to death.

So, good news: I have a job interview tomorrow morning at one of my roommates’ work. I’ll (hopefully) be working at a big-chain drugstore.

Other good news: I made meatballs with (pre-made) marinara sauce and pasta for lunch, and I’m currently making chicken broth with veggies and seasonings to mix with leftover rice for dinner.

Other other good news: I finally saw Zootopia. It was a good movie. Roommates and I are going to (hopefully) watch Deadpool tonight because they haven’t seen it yet.

I still need to get a mailbox key of my own (I’m using my roommates’ keys currently), my new state ID and debit card are in the mail (as well as a Candela [TEAM VALOR!!!] print I ordered a few months ago from a Storenvy shopfront that were supposed to ship early September that I’m still waiting on), and then I can purchase this kick ass phone case for my upgraded phone.

There’s still lots of adulting to be done but meh. It’s hot and muggy and I dun wanna. Besides, so much of it is being held up by other people and the mail.

The forecast called for rain all this week, and so far, I’ve been lied to.

@PI, She’s been, uh, busy. Lately. I’ve needed some help getting out of the house…

I hope your cooking goes nicely! There’s little I find more relaxing than making a meal for friends.

Paradoxical Intention - Resident Cheeseburger Slut

Update on the cooking: Roommates went off to go have a little alone time and ignored my pasta for a bit, so we’re having it for dinner instead. Chicken broth has been put in the fridge for tomorrow’s supper.

Yay two day meals!

Also, the mail was running late today, so I got my debit card! I can now buy things!

I’m gonna buy a shelf! And a desk! And some batteries for my alarm clock! And some replacement cords for my computer! And a phone case!

And if I’m really good (and Walmart has some clearance bargains) I’m gonna get me a new Monster High doll to celebrate!

I don’t know about the femspiracy or even the lavender menace, but the kitty cabal have definitely taken over. Every sign in Clapham Underground Station (and I do mean every sign) has been replaced by a cat picture.

I wonder how long the mysterious cats will be there before they softly and silently vanish away?!?
Will any travellers vanish with them … ?????

IIRC CATS has about 3 weeks arranged.

It’s hubby and my 11th anniversary today. We got a good cut of pork sirloin which has been marinating overnight in honey, tamari, garlic, and ginger. To be served with sauted apples, pears, and onions with a bourbon reduction and roasted sweet potatoes.

PI:

Other other good news: I finally saw Zootopia. It was a good movie.

Isn’t it? It hit me early on, when Judy praises Nick for being “articulate”. Oh wow, I thought, I hope people are getting this. Such good voice acting, too! Not just from Idris Elba, who is, well, he’s Idris fucking Elba.

“We need to address the elephant in the room. Francine?”

Paradoxical Intention - Resident Cheeseburger Slut

@Moggie: GOD THE WRITING.

SPOILERS:

It’s sooooo good. And it hits on so many aspects of racism so succinctly and obviously, and I love Nick SOOOOOO much, and his flashback to being a scout hit me so hard I teared up.

And I love the fact that Judy addresses racism towards herself, but she also has to learn that what she said towards predators and her actions aren’t okay.

And I love that her childhood bully went and got therapy and expressed, in no uncertain terms, that what he did made him a jerk.

I also love that the writers hit on other animal stereotypes and proved them wrong, like the scene where they went to the Naturalist resort and they talked to the elephant, and Chong’s character was like “Man, I wish I had a mind like an elephant” while reciting every minuscule detail of the otter they were looking for in the form of a question towards the elephant.

So good.

/SPOILERS

Everyone should go see Zootopia. It’s really damn good.

In job news: I had my interview today. I had to redo the application for the third time because their computer system borked, but it finally worked, and I did the interview, and the manager said that it went well, and he told me he’d let me know by the end of tomorrow at the latest.

Actually, as I typed this, I just got a call from roommate. He just got told by his manager that I need to come in tomorrow at eleven AM to actually accept the job, and then he’ll tell me when my first day will begin.

So, I got the job!

I think I’m going to be starting on the register for a while, then they’ll move me to the photo lab, where I requested to be since graphic design degree. I did get a bit of a talk today about how the photo lab is the place where you do a little bit of everything around the store, and as such, it’s a great springboard for other opportunities.

I also mentioned that I’m the fidgety sort, and I will do random miscellaneous things like cleaning and sweeping when I have no other official duties to do, and apparently that’s very much appreciated.

But yay!

I’m also looking forward to Thursday, where I’m going to finally get my computer desk and bookshelf and some random bits and bobs from Walmart, so there’s also that.

Busy, busy…

Not just racism, of course. Don’t want to get spoilery, but there’s that scene where Judy reports being threatened by a predator, and isn’t believed. Oh boy. And this is Disney!

And it has sloths! Who doesn’t love sloths!

So, I got the job!

Less fun stuff here lately. Sort of a mixed bag.

Have been coming to the realization that a close friend of mine has become more and more conservative over the past years, or perhaps he’s always been that way and I just didn’t notice – we don’t talk about that sort of thing all that much. Now I find out he likes Trump because “At least he’ll shake things up” and “Better than someone as corrupt as Clinton”. He also dislikes the idea of the minimum wage raising above where it is now, and hates our current NDP government because it’s investing in social services.

It’s upsetting that there are things I find I can’t talk about anymore with the two of them (his wife is also a close friend, but hasn’t gotten as, uh, vociferous). I’m sort of deeply worried to ask about what they think about systemic racism or the like, because I think I know the answer he’s gonna give.

So that’s fun. In other news, my first published book just showed up in the mail today! I’ve got a chapter in a textbook on analytics systems. It’s mostly CV-fodder, but it’s nice to actually have a published book. Shiny and red hardcover, with my name squished in amongst the greats. Sort of humbling really.

So yeah, mixed bag!
