I love the sound of the ocean. Also looking at the ocean. Probably some of you do as well. So put this on, ignore the big watermark, and just relax the hell out.

My Otter made a fantastic vegetarian quesadilla explosion salad.

There’s a corn relish in there, and a ranch dressing with chipotle peppers, and a fajita marinade, and spectacular fried tortilla crisps. All made from scratch.

I made a potato and kale gratin.

I was pretty happy about it, but then I got yelled at by a mean dog.

I work this weekend–that’s how it goes in my line of work–but I’m taking advantage of my roommate’s not being home to cook (a vegetarian meatloaf-style concoction) and crank up the tunes.
R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts” just turned into Lenny Kravitz’s “Are You Gonna Go My Way” on the TV’s rock-hits station.

*changes to classic-rock station*

Ah. Tom Petty, “Runnin’ Down a Dream”. 😀

Paradoxical Intention - Resident Cheeseburger Slut

Hopefully someday soon I will get to make Katz’ Chicken for the roomies. If it worked wonders with my picky-as-hell aunt, imagine how they’ll like it!

(Though I gotta make it with potatoes instead of squash. Guy Roomie doesn’t like squash. But that’s okay. Potatoes are delish-as-fuck in that dish.)

I found my recipe notebook, so now I can start to fill it up again! 😀

Cookies and delicious chicken for everyone!

This is where we tell our stuff?
Let’s see…
That will be a rant, so hold on to your chairs.

I was depressed (you know), really depressed, not leaving home, sleeping 90% of the day, etc. So, I made the difficult decision of getting a job, thinking it would help. I went working at my aunt’s store. It did work, for a while. And then after 40 days of verbal abuse and a terrible environment she paid me 60% of a monthly minimum wage, considering I spent almost half of that in transportation (not to mention eating – we didn’t have right to even drink water, we had to buy it), and worked 50 hours a week, 10 of them saturdays, 8 sundays, which AT LEAST should give me 10 extra hours which should be paid double, and at most is AGAINST THE DAMN LAW. She pretty much paid 50% of what I was supposed to receive. She only called me because she knew I wouldn’t call her out. And I didn’t, I simply stayed a few more days and made up an excuse and said I wouldn’t be able to work there anymore.
Buuuut, as the hole always go deeper with me, the day after I received the money I lost my temper and cried in front of the other seller. She confessed she was being screwed over too, and being her a single mother, I ended up saying “listen, you don’t accept this. She’s rich. Seriously, you have no idea how rich she is. So you must demand your rights, don’t feel sorry, she can afford! How cruel of her, you have a baby you raise all alone!!! “. Guess what? This woman, who I considered a friend I wanted to help, for no reason AT ALL told my aunt that I said this and a ton more of lies, starting a huge family fight where the woman I loved and trusted, every since childhood, said the most horrible things about my character and personality. This combined with my previous depression and with the passive aggressive way I was treated at my aunt’s (I stayed there for a week after the fire, because I was terrified to enter home, and couldn’t see my parents’ bed while they were at the ICU), it broke me. I know I may be asking too much and acted wrong, but nothing makes me more depressed than finding out someone I love always disliked me. Summed with the fact I am really lonely and friendless at the moment, I got in a really suicidal vibe for the first time in a long while. And those all are the reasons I was out of here for a bit long.

But now I am a lot better. I returned to therapy, am studying, working out and walking under the sun daily, and working every thursday and friday as a waitress in a barbecue place! It’s a veeery tiring job, I am paid almost twice what I was, and I love my job, especially because I get free EXCELLENT barbecue and cola (I love cola), am not under pressure to sell anything (I don’t get percentage tips), I spend nothing with transport, unsatisffacted customers are not my responsibility and I can be as rude as I like to harassers (at my aunt’s store I had to do anything I had to sell, including kindly smiling to even harassers and a low-key stalker, and was mocked for it). I never knew jobs could be so nice and I am really happy! So my friday afternoon super relax hour today was, weirdly, work :3 It’s almost weird to be treated (mostly) so nicely. And I get my weekly dose of “actually interacting with humans in the real world”!

Ooooh, that all looks amazing! Including the mean dog.

@PI
TWO asian markets? Oh, god, I envy you so much. Btw, to try to help in case you don’t know, I think the cables you’re looking for are a power cord and either an HDMI cable or a VGA cable. Try to figure out by googling these names and comparing the results to the conectors, or by reading it by the side of the conectors, it may be written. I believe they are cheaper than you think! (unless you’re looking for something really high tech, then the HDMI can get really expensive). Hope I helped, but if you already knew, sorry for assuming you didn’t!

I have the same problem. For me it is indication of something else that you need to take a break from. Usually when i am at work and have been away for a long time no matter how much i sleep I’m always tired. At that point i know it is time to take a break. So my tip is if you can’t escape physically by going somewhere on a short break try to break mentally. Like changing your routine or finding something relaxing and basic to fill your off time. I write a diary by hand to keep my thoughts together& also write short stories. If you do this before you sleep it might help you have better dreams and sounder sleep. 🙂

Can I just take a moment to say thank you? I would love to make a game, but I don’t dare. Most of my peers in my line of work are very active on the internet, showing what they can do. I don’t dare to do that either, and that’s a big hit to my career.

People like Anita Sarkeesian, David Futrelle and every feminist blogger and activist out there are fighting against the people who are making me too afraid to engage in public life. I understand that comes at an enormous safety risk, takes enormous work and carries an enormous emotional cost.

So if you are a feminist activist on the internet, I just want to say thank you for fighting for my rights. You are very literally my heroes.

@Chiomera: that’s some tale. I’m glad you’ve found a job that isn’t trying to exploit you. Also, I’ve notice no one abuses quite like blood relatives.
As a side note, I recall a couple I met at church many years ago. Thy had been raised Mormon, and decided to leave the LDS church when they heard they would be stuck with their families for all eternity.

@valarys: the drowsiness could be just a situational thing that will clear up with what Valentine suggested. However, there are a number of physical and psychological diseases that can cause unrefreshing sleep (for me, it was a sign of undiagnosed diabetes). If it continues to be a problem, I’d see about getting it checked out. Gods know, there are plenty of physicians out there who are so burnt out they no longer care, but if it’s causing trouble with your life, it may be worth the risk.

My work depends on various departments knowing what the status of every tiny thing is across over a hundred people. We are currently using a bunch of separate google sheets, with no connection between them. Other departments don’t know they exist, and sometimes not even everyone in the department knows that they exist.

When i started, i made a tracker for my department using google sheets with drop downs, conditional formatting, and some fancy sums. Eventually it was folded into the main tracker we were using, with me walking someone else through how i made everything. But it was still a thing made on the fly.

Well the shit has really hit the fan organisationally, and since we can’t implement the best solution, we’re going with this integrated tracker. Since i’ve shown people most of the cool things (don’t count manually, for the love of bob, this is a SPREADSHEET use a sumiffffff) i was tapped to make it.

So last weekend i threw something together, and yesterday i had meetings with all the department heads to go through what i had made, ask for feedback on the organisation and if there were any features i could do. All the meetings went well except for one, which got so heated… omg. And i have two people intensely telling me why they can’t do something, and i’m not understanding exactly, also i was asked for this as a solution to a problem someone else is having, so…?

BUT i really do enjoy making spreadsheets (weird i know) and usually do them for fun. So this was the first time i was paid to work on it, since yesterday was allllll spreadsheet! Also, for the first time in my life, I got a bonus???? For taking something on that is most definitely NOT in my job description. And since i just decided on the fly to go to a weekend camp in another country and was feeling really poor, i’m so happy.

Now i just need to implement the changes, and start entering enough data to test if the formulas will all work, and things will reference properly. Then i need to at least rough out the permissions so we can lock things and not have random people messing up my formulas.

And i just wanted to share because it’s so nice to be recognised at work for various skills you have? I’m always always convinced i’m not good at my job and that my work is perpetually stuck in the ‘learning’ stage. I know i’m getting better/faster, but the fact that i’m a recognised repository foe knowledge about google sheets and also a program we sometimes use makes me feel way more secure in my job.

After that teel dear, i wanted to congratulate everyone who is feeling better on that! Good to hear. Internet hugs (if wanted) to those who are having a rough time.

@PI
Definitely check out the thrift shop for cables! They usually have something.

@Chiomara
Oh man. I am so sorry to hear about you working for your aunt, and how that all played out. Especially since the worst came from you being an awesome person and letting someone know that their rights are being trampled on, and that they don’t have to take it. It is awful how that turned out, but you are amazing for trying to help.

Sometimes people legit don’t know that something isn’t okay (a landlord who made the immigrant roommate pay for wear and tear damage but didn’t try with me because he knew i would call the landlord tenant board on him comes to mind)* so it’s good that you said something.

*i found out about this much later and was incensed. The room mate didn’t want me to call the board, so i didn’t, but now hopefully she knows that is NOT COOL. Leaky pipes from the apartment *above* us are not our responsibility.

Thanks for the suggestions folks. To be honest, I am on seven different types of medication that cause drowsiness and usually my body has adapted well to them and maybe I’m just suffering side-effects I don’t normally get with them. Anyway, I am firmly going to bed at bedtime, no all night gaming and doing some writing for my blog and hopefully that’ll make me settle back into my usual routine again.

I should probably check in, oops – apologies for being MIA this week, combination of gall bladder issues (thank everything for the Australian health care system) and just plain burnout. ^^; I can only read “Most of the Internet wants me to be raped to death” so many times before needing to disconnect from the real world and just bury myself in Pokemon for a while.

epitome of incomprehensibility

Best wishes to everybody! Even though it’s no longer Friday. 🙂

@(((Chiomara))) – sorry to hear about the awful job experience and so glad you’re in a better workplace!

@kupo – That’s great that you’ve finally got a diagnosis! By the way, how did the white chocolate cake turn out? I missed that in the other thread.

@Rhuu – One of the things I’m thankful for is people teaching me how to do stuff on Excel (simple things, like clicking and dragging things, and the sum functions). I can use that stuff in non-work life!

Me: I’m on my way to tutor a new student and I’m a bit nervous. She’s in grade 6 and studying for a high school entrance exam (I never had to take such a thing myself, and the actual test varies from school to school). Plus, I find I work better with teenagers and university students than with kids.

But, really, that doesn’t sound like something to be nervous about, does it? I don’t know why I’m always nervous whenever I do anything somewhat new.

1st, hugs to the those havin a hard time and hi fives to those in a good place

If I may whine a tad:
I just threw up for the 1st time in like 15 years. Not feeling great. It’s not a bug, and I’m not sick as far as I know. Had something caught in my gullet and, well, baby with the bath water. I’m a little drowsy, I’m shaking quite a bit, and my whole abdomen is sore. And I hafta go out later. Wasn’t looking forward to it before, and I’m dreading it now. I’ll probably be fine

My body hates me. It isn’t killing me or anything. It’s keeping me alive while making everything as insidiously, randomly difficult as possible. There’s the bully that beats you up, and the one who hides your stuff. One is dangerous, the other is… hate. There are others living with very serious conditions (grats again, kupo), so I don’t mean to… I dunno. I just never wanna eat anything ever again 🙁

Went to visit my nineteen year old son at the residential care home he’s at yesterday. He’s still obsessing about tsunamis, which is at least distracting him from the voices in his head. One of the staffers told me that he’s gotten more visitors than any other resident. Going to try getting him out for a few hours this afternoon.

I’ve started taking 5-HTP again. It’s a serotonin precursor. Don’t know if it’s placebo or not, but both my mood and digestion seem noticeably improved.

It occasionally strikes me how, as an interracial gay married couple with two children, our problems are ordinary problems that any couple could have. That is true privilege.

The cake was good, but did not live up to the hype I gave it in my head as it sat and cooled for way too long. 😉 It’s mildly sweet and the custard flavor is the majority of the flavor to it – the cake part was not really noticeable.

I’d like to ask the feminist hivemind for some advice, if I may.

My landlady has previously refused to give me sight of her license to let the house to multiple people (an HMO in the jargon.) This is suspicious, but she isn’t legally required to let me see it, so at the time it was just meh.

She has recently asked us all to make sure we’re out of the house on a particular day, because she wants to get an electrician in to do some unspecified repairs. She is probably unaware of the fact that the local council have notified me that they’re going to be inspecting the house on that day to see whether she’s breaching her HMO. I strongly suspect that the electrician is just a cover story. When pressed on the matter she was extremely vague about which electrical work needed to be done but was adamant that it was too dangerous for us to be home all that day.

I dislike being lied to, so I have arranged to work from home that day to confront her on it. I have also started to ask around as to whether anyone else has a spare room.

Would people recommend that I let her know that I know, or is it better not to?

If she’s breaking the law in the way that I suspect she is, being caught could result in a fine of tens of thousands of pounds, plus potential jail time. As such I suspect that she is not going to be in the mood to compromise, and may do the sort of thing that people do when their back is to the wall.

Kupo – Thanks, good to know. I don’t think I’ll make it now, since I only marginally like custard and would need a lot more cake to balance it for my own taste. Cool idea, though.

Kittybeast was “monstering” around the house this morning for the first time in a long time. I hadn’t even realized how long; probably cause I’ve been in my own head a lot the past year due to losing my dad and now a beloved aunt. I’ve been treating him for worms for a couple of weeks with an herbal/vitamin/homeo remedy and he’s really responding!

GUYYYS I STUDIED TODAY. I wrote something for my thesis. It took me the whole day to mentally prepare for 2 hour’s work (it’s a compulsive thing), but I did something. Little victories…

Also, I seem to have developed acne which sucks. Any good tips for almost-30 cis gals with a comedoic breakout? Hormones? Over-the counter stuff? What else? My face looks like the typical East-European rural landscape in the autumn, when potatoes have been harvested and the fields are all cucked up. :/
