GamerGaters attack study on video game losers lashing out at women … by lashing out at women

Women ruining the lives of men by invading the male space of gaming
Women ruining the lives of men by invading the male space of gaming

So the #GamerGaters are mad about a new study that suggests that some of the most dickishly misogynistic male gamers are quite literally losers. That is, men playing video games like Halo and Call of Duty online tend to lash out at women players when they’re doing their worst.

Looking at the behavior of a number of men and women over the course of 163 games of Halo 3, researchers Michael Kasumovic and Jeffrey Kuznekoff from the University of New South Wales and Miami University found that

lower-skilled players were more hostile towards a female-voiced teammate, especially when performing poorly. In contrast, lower-skilled players behaved submissively towards a male-voiced player in the identical scenario. This difference in gender-directed behaviour became more extreme with poorer focal-player performance.

In other words, the more of a video game loser they were, the more of a misogynistic loser they became.

We suggest that low-status males increase female-directed hostility to minimize the loss of status as a consequence of hierarchical reconfiguration resulting from the entrance of a woman into the competitive arena.

In other words, they hate losing … to a girl.

The researchers argue that the entrance of larger numbers of women into the dude-heavy world of video games is especially threatening to “[l]ow-status and low-performing males,” who

have the most to lose as a consequence of the hierarchical reconfiguration due to the entry of a competitive woman. As men often rely on aggression to maintain their dominant social status, the increase in hostility towards a woman by lower-status males may be an attempt to disregard a female’s performance and suppress her disturbance on the hierarchy to retain their social rank.

If this all sounds to you like a plausible explanation for a lot of the anger driving #GamerGaters, you’re not the only one to see the connection.

A recent article on the study on Yahoo News suggests that,

[a]s gaming has traditionally been a male-dominated pastime, these findings could go some way to explain 2014′s Gamergate furore. Several high profile female game developers were targeted with a torrent of misogynistic abuse, including rape and death threats, coordinated by factions of male gamers using sites like 4Chan and Reddit.

And this is what has the #GamerGaters on Reddit’s KotakuInAction subreddit pig-biting mad. In a thread complaining about the Yahoo News piece, the regulars show just what losers they really are by lashing out at … women.

Evidently forgetting that the study in question was conducted by two men, a Redditor called Katastic_Voyage won more than 130 upvotes with a lovely rant declaring that

There’s a huge freaking difference between shit talking, and bullying.

But most of these articles and “papers” are written by women, who live in a woman’s world, and don’t understand the first thing about what it’s really like to be a man. The others are by men who are basically women but doesn’t realize it–they were likely forced to grow up in a woman dominated, catty, passive-aggressive world.

Ok, my bad. The researchers might appear to be men, but are probably “men who are basically women but doesn’t realize it.”

And somehow this all has something to do with metal music:

Woman call all men “dumb” because that’s what they call anything they don’t understand. It’d be like someone who likes classical music calling metal dumb. Even if they’re actually related. Even though there’s plenty of beauty and complexity in metal… they don’t ever dive into it so they deride and dismiss it.

It IS real music, mom! (Sound of bedroom door slamming, followed by the muffled intro to “Enter Sandman.”)

So they take things like:

The need to compete? They think it’s violence.

The need to shit talk? They think it’s bullying.

The fact that men can look at other women and not cheat? It blows their minds that men can actually feel pleasure just seeing a woman of beauty… and that’s it.

Uh, I thought we were talking about video games. Did some mean lady just break up with you?

A fellow called Zakamaru, replying to Katastic_Voyage, decided to show how not mad he was about women invading “male spaces” by getting mad about women invading “male spaces.”

It’s what happens when a bunch of women get into male spaces and some fail to understand it.

Gaming has always been competitive. I can’t even begin to count the amount of times I was called various names and derogatory remarks, but it doesn’t fucking matter. You get insulted all the time, and it takes a special type of person to actually take offense to that. …

It’s not that we hate women. With gaming being a predominantly male hobby, it’s going to have elements of masculinity, competitiveness, and testosterone floating about. When people shit talk, they will use any sort of “weakness” that you have and attack it. If you’re unskilled, you’re a noob/scrub. If you’re an obvious underaged child, you get called a kid. If someone needs a quick all-purpose insult, you’re now a faggot.

When some women see this, they immediately think that it needs to change to fit their worldview. To them, these insults are simply unacceptable, and are “x-phobic” or whatever tumblr buzzword they feel like using today. Never mind the fact that gaming was born from a bunch of socially awkward men who carved out their own space with their own culture and lingo. No, now you have to cater to ME, because I’m a GIRL.

Boy, you guys really put those dumb lady researchers (who aren’t ladies, but who maybe sort of really are) in their place.

I’m kind of curious now is anyone else playing Life is Strange? Cause I’m really loving it.

@Jenora Feuer Arguably my Irish ass. Champions was madness, fun madness but still madness. 🙂 5th ed does what it does well, I’d say it’s a good starting point for someone new to tabletops. Oooooooh I miss Cyberpunk, I should see if I can get a game of that or maybe Cybergen going once the current crop of campaigns my groups are in run their course. Pathfinder is a lot of fun, the Kingmaker adventure path in particular introduced some really cool rule options I’ve run with in a few campaigns now. My group ended up founding the kingdom of Gygaxia, known throughout the world for it celestial bees and divine honey.

@Falconer I believe you’re right. I thought about buying those hardbacks but at 50 bucks a pop I just couldn’t justify it. And hearing some of the reviews here no I’ll probably skip them completley.

My mom was worried that D&D was at the edge of demons and satanic worship would be the next step, so in order to assuage her fears in a way that would allow my brother and his friends to hang out in the garage every week to play D&D, my dad became the DM. To this day, all these years later (nowadays the gaming is online not in the garage) gaming is something that my dad and brother do together and bond over. Not that I wouldn’t be welcome to join, I’m just not into gaming, also I discovered I get motion-sickness with certain games. My brother gives dad in-game tips/tricks/cheat codes etc. and they do missions together. My only game playing experience was with some of those found on BBS’s back in the day before ICQ and what we now call “the internet” started leaving bbs’s behind.

@spacelawn

Is that an “ohh i won’t argue” because you understand because those are sort of legitimate complaints of CoD or an “ohh i won’t argue” because I’m wrong as fuck and you don’t want to get into it? Because I’m cool either way. 😛

Hey, for real, like whatever game you want and correct any mistakes I make about CoD. I don’t play them so I wouldn’t really know much about them anyway.

Oh, and WoW just added a thing where your pet cat will sit in your lap if you click on it and type /sit. It’s adorable, although I’m not sure if letting my cinder kitten climb in my lap is a good idea. She is made of fire, after all.

@pendraegon,

Life Is Strange is pretty awesome isn’t it? I’m nearing the end of Episode 3 and argh, because I don’t think 4 and 5 are out yet. Although I cheated and started looking at a walkthrough to get all the photographs, and now I keep on spoiling the story for myself :(.

@Pandapool

Jeez do you have to be so aggressive?

What im meaning with that is anyone saying that the gameplay doesn’t change between games have obviously not played any of the recent games.

@Misha It is! Episode 4 should come out in the next week or two from what Dontnod is saying. And oh my god the ending of episode 3! I haven’t been that genuinely shocked by a video game since the ending of the original Metroid.

@Misha

Once all the episodes are out imma play Life is Strange. Hate having to wait months for a new episode. Do like with Resi: Revelations 2 and just drop a new episode every week.

Anyone looking for a better version of D&D should try Legend. It’s free and it’s really simple and flexible; for instance, instead of a weapon list, you just pick the properties you want your weapon to have and call it whatever you want.

@porcuspinus: It is a real shame, indeed, considering that many of the rest of us are at least open-minded about these kinds of things(my very first friend on GTA Online was female, FWIW). But then again, a few particularly vocal asshats can ruin the rep of just about any hobby if their B.S. isn’t combatted…..

@Katz I’ve heard of Legend but never got the chance to give it a try, how’s it play out at the table?

@Spacelawn I don’t think Dontnod really had the option to release that way. Life was a pretty risky game to release considering it’s pretty high budget for a smaller release and it’s not a definite blockbuster.

Pendraegon: I really enjoyed it. It’s quite fast and intuitive, and every character feels really awesome and powerful.

Wanna make Gators mad? Mention studies illuminating the true nature of their movement or the true nature of misogynist gamers. What makes Gators happy? Being able to say you can’t proooove it was a Gamergater from their anonymous clubhouse on 8chan who attacked their targets.

Bullies hate daylight.

OT, but I just checked out Judgybitch, and she’s saying (without a trace of irony) what a great president Donald Trump would make. So now I know which demographic he’s appealing to. I also now have definitive proof that JB is an idiot, as well as being an asshat,

On topic, my favourite game is Minecraft, I’m a sandbox person.

Age of Empires 2 is easily one of my favorite games. Age of Empires 3 just… didn’t live up to that expectation and I have no idea why. It just isn’t nearly as fun for some strange reason.

On the FPS thing, I feel like CoD4 (i.e. Modern Warfare) was, itself, really good. There was variety in the gameplay, very good attention to detail when replicating actual places, interesting use of “futuristic” equipment. The story was pretty sweet, having one of your playable characters die from a nuke was intense and a really good twist. Overall it felt like the game did acknowledge the devastation of war while still delivering a fun experience.

Then every single other Modern Warfare game has just been an attempt to copy the first and that’s what fucked everything up. “let’s have a playable character die” gets overused, and with characters we haven’t grown attached to (as opposed to the first time when it was someone we had been paying as for quite some time). They decided to try and be as edgey as possible and they became cartoonishly over the top. . Aside from fighting in suburban America, I felt a huge “meh” from all the others and it really just felt like more of the same.

Then tons of other FPSs decide “lets be like call of duty”

@Moocow

Modern Warfare is indeed the best in the series and probably one of the best FPS’s out there. However, i think MW2 and 3 are good in there own, mainly due to the over-the-topness of it making it so very entertaining.

The story in MW2 and 3 is indeed kinda shite. But those two games have a surprising sense of atmosphere to them that is virtually unparalleled, crazy tempo and set piece wise.

I could say more but it’s really so i rather not.

Brownscale military shooters are the romantic comedies of gaming. The only difference is the name of the game/movie, the names of the personality-free characters and the location.

That’s why I like Hat Fortress 2 and Splatoon. They’re different, they’re colourful, they have plots and personalities other than “Grizzled stubble-faced white man vs other grizzled stubble-faced white men/Nazis/terrorists/DLC zombies (???)” and they revel in how much fun they are.

In my opinion, anyway. Obviously, people can like whatever they like, brownscale military shooters just aren’t my thing personally. ^^;

As a long time troll on the latest and “greatest” online games, I can say I would report the opposite.

Cool – when is your study being published? What’s your sample size? What’s your P-value? How did you control for the fact that you are a single person, in a single gender, who is “trolling” rather than making an actual attempt at studying this phenomenon?

spacelawn

When it comes to CoD, the problem isn’t CoD itself, rather the problem is the amount of games trying to be like CoD, completely missing the point in the process. Lacking that general finely tuned “smoothness” that the genre (CoD that is) has. Imitating CoD won’t get you anywhere. You won’t the CoD killer. In order to do something like that you need to be different and not try to be like CoD.

Titanfall for example, not a CoD killer but man is that a brilliant game. Love the flow that one can have playing it. Ironically, the Titan’s are the least interesting part about it. It’s all about the parkour!
