This whole “mocking misogyny” thing? Apparently we’re doing it all wrong. Over on Reddit’s Men’s Rights Subreddit, jmnzz has helpfully explained what misogyny is, and what it isn’t.
Misogyny: The hatred of women
Not misogyny: Bad taste jokes about rape/abuse/etc. Logic. Counterarguments. Disagreements. Harsh language. Saying cunt. Saying bitch. Calling women names. Being pro-life. Calling every woman who accuses a man of rape a liar.
Why are none of these things misogyny? Because you do not have to hate women to do any or all of these things. You might, but not everyone who does them hate women.
Seriously. What on earth is misogynist about calling all the fucking cunts who accuse men of rape of being goddamn lying bitches? When guys call women lying whores, they do it out of love.
But hey, in all seriousness, I have to give Maggie props here for actually raising the issue of misogyny in r/mensrights.

He’s also claiming feminism is a narrow ideology because feminism isn’t really into gendered slurs. If not liking gendered insults makes me “narrow” or whatever, so be it.
@hellkell: Yes, depending on the situation. I will call her “my dirty little slut/whore” when in bed, but 1) she likes it 2) she knows that I respect her and 3) I wouldn’t use those words to describe her to other people.
The funny thing is that most of Brandon’s alternate terms are still gendered, and sexist. I think he’s literally incapable of addressing a woman in a way that isn’t sexist.

Okay, David has his own take on things which appeals to the reader’s emotions at the expense of rationality. I will try to avoid such tactics and will instead attempt a more thorough analysis:
Not misogyny: Bad taste jokes about rape/abuse/etc.
Rape and abuse do not only affect women.
Logic. Counterarguments. Disagreements. Harsh language.
Obvious.
Saying cunt. Saying bitch. Calling women names.
Women are not an amorphous blob. Insulting one woman does not mean you have insulted womankind.
Being pro-life. Calling every woman who accuses a man of rape a liar.
Political views do not equate to hating women. And no, calling every woman who accuses a man of rape a liar does not mean you hate all women. It just means you think rape against women does not exist. There are people who think the moon landing did not happen, that does not mean they all hate America.
Let me clarify what a misogynist is: A misogynist is a man who hates all women for being women. A misogynist is not someone who is merely rude or deluded. A misogynist is a man who hates all women, no matter their character, for the fact that they were born female. By using “misogynist” as a political tool or a method to control the reader’s emotions, you cheapen the word and do a disservice to everyone who has been hurt by prejudice and bigotry. Have a nice day.
Of course she likes it! Her chip is programmed that way!
You’re not really gonna concern troll, are you? Puh-leeze.
@Hellkell: That old bit again? You really need to get some new jokes.
Oh, the long-winded mansplainy troll is back! I like this one, he’s funny.
I AM VERY CONCERNED, YOU GUYS.
Brandon: So how are all the people you’re calling “cunts” and “whores” that aren’t Ashley going to know what you *actually* mean? Ashley knows you’re playing because you’ve been together for a while, but for people who don’t know you as intimately? You’re basically asking them to become mind readers.
Here’s the deal, Brandon. Whatever intention someone has when calling a woman a c***, the end result will probably be her feeling worthless. Why would you insist upon using a word that is so hurtful to other people? Let’s look at your list you made of adjectives you made:
All of those adjectives are ways to describe annoying behavior of people without using gendered slurs. Why not use them?
Brandon, it’s just as fresh as you talking about your oh-so-edgy sex-life with Ashley.
Hey Brandon! No love for me? I’m still waiting on whatever point you were trying to make with that little conversion chart.
You’re right.
Good luck with that, I’ve seen your posts, and it’s not something you generally do.
They disproportionately affect women.
This is true. However, using ‘cunt’ or ‘bitch’ as an insult relies on womanhood as an insult; that requires you to think that women, as a class, are lesser.
A political view that holds that women aren’t people, but fetuses are, is misogynistic. This isn’t rocket science; either women get the right to bodily autonomy men do, or they aren’t people, and you are a misogynist.
If you always think women are liars, you think less of women, you twit.
Denying painfully obvious evidence of crimes that disproportionately harm women is misogynist, you twit.
If denying the moon landing somehow perpetuated harm against the USA, I would argue that those views are anti-USA, but they don’t. They don’t even cost the US prestige.
You don’t get to define that word, you overambitious twit.
But hellkell, she gave him head and he slapped her ass. That’s pretty hardcore if you’re as boring as Brandon is.
Why do I get the impression that Brandon’s idea of being sexually edgy is to turn the light on?
@ Snowy – I’m still waiting on an explanation of why “no thanks, you’re not my type” is objectification.
You’re not really gonna concern troll, are you? Puh-leeze.
I’m just stating a fact. If that bothers you, you can put your snark aside for a second and address the points I have raised.
I suspect it will be a long wait. *makes sandwiches*
This is a rather ironic comment, in context.
Cassandra: you’re right. When Ward and June throw down, it is HOT.
Why is it that almost every time someone tries to play Dictionary Police with the word “misogyny”, they conveniently leave out the the “mistrust and contempt” part of the definition? “I don’t HATE women! They’re just lying whores, is all!”
You raised a point other than the one on your head?
Factfinder, Rutee Katreya already did an excellent point by point rebuttal of your points.
@Rutee: More men are raped by other men (prison rape) then men raping women…just an FYI.
