Open Thread for Non-Personal Stuff. No Trolls, No MRAs.

trollhunter

I had an interesting conversation recently with a woman on Twitter who told me that my policy of letting MRAs and misogynists comment here, at least so long as they’re not abusive, was keeping her and others she knew from joining in the conversation; she wanted a place to discuss MRAs where she didn’t have to deal with them.

I know a lot of the regulars here like engaging with the trolls and MRAs who stop by, but I’d like to create some space here for commenters who want to discuss the issues in a Troll- and MRA-free zone.

So I thought I’d try starting a new kind of Open Thread: A No-Troll, No-MRA, No-Misogynist, No-Rape-Apologist, No-Douchebag Thread to discuss the issues I cover on the blog and anything related to that: Misogyny, MRAs, PUAs, MGTOW, the “Red Pill,” and so on. Enjoy!

Oh, and if a troll wanders in, or if someone starts being douchey, ignore them and send me a note. I’ll delete their comments and ban them. No warning, no moderation, straight ban.

I would like to say something about the โ€œideas for a movie about a sex workerโ€ in the topic. Can I just say it really bothers me? Havenโ€™t there been enough movies about female prostitutes already? Is there any role a woman can play besides that? How about a movie about the johns, for instance? As for the trope of a happy hooker thatโ€™s been done too โ€“ see: โ€œThe Happy Hooker,โ€ from the 1970s. As for a failed actress becoming a sex worker โ€“ see โ€œGirl Sixโ€ by Spike Lee. Itโ€™s all been done before!

And the idea that a prostitute shouldnโ€™t have any hint of emotional damage from the work, duress, being trafficked or pimped, is just so damaging in my opinion. There are people trying to rescue sex workers and trafficked people, and this just puts a nice PR spin on it that there is no such thing as an unhappy sex worker. Iโ€™m cringing.

It really was an open question, so thanks for sharing; I want to hear everyone’s opinions.

Two notes: It’s a book, not a movie, and she actually isn’t the protagonist, she’s the love interest (the protagonist is also female).

Does anyone else here have a cat that will get inside of furniture?

We had a cat who’d pulled the cloth under a couch loose (it was an off-the-floor base on sliders) and liked crawling inside, like it was a hammock sitting on the floor.

This cat also likes to climb in the back of drawers (She’s wee) and is often found sleeping in my husband’s underwear. I tell him she’s warming them for him. ๐Ÿ˜‰ She also likes to climb up in the top of the closet and knock things down.

We have another cat that likes to shred foam, like yoga mats and flip-flops. I’m not sure what that’s about either.

Cats are funny critters. ๐Ÿ˜€

My favorite cat antic though is when our old man cat “makes out” with one of our big dogs. We can’t decide if he really loves his puppy friend or if he’s trying to mark or annoy him, but he aggressively rubs and rolls on the dog like he’s coated in catnip. He’ll put his whole face in the dog’s ear and nuzzle him. He only does this with one particular dog, so maybe it’s love? Either way, it’s funny.

Speaking of funny critters, Hubby and I were coming back from a matinee today and there was a small werewolf riding his bike down our street.

It was this neighborhood boy who I just find endlessly entertaining. (He’s always asking, “Do you want to know something?” and every time, I find that I really do, because it’s gonna be good.) He was just riding his bike in a werewolf mask. In Ohio Valley humidity. In the summer heat. Like ya do.

My kids say he does it all the time.

For this, I will keep that kid in popsicles all summer long. That shit is hilarious.

There is also a little neighborhood boy with the most adorable mohawk who is intrigued with our garden. I’ve been giving him seeds and instructions. I showed him where to pinch off the basil and told him to take some as needed the other day and he was just so happy. He’s already requested some of our onions and garlic when their ready. I love that. You can get onions anywhere, but he wants these onions. Awwww……

Read it in syndication in my free daily local paper today.

@pallygirl: IMO thereโ€™s too many movies with Tom Cruise. Another movie is about to release that I wonโ€™t watch because Tom Cruise plays Tom Cruise in every movie.

If you’re talking about “Edge of Tomorrow”, it’s actually pretty darned good. Emily Blunt is way more co-protagonist than foil to Cruise (despite the awkward nod at romance shoe-horned in), Cruise at least starts off playing as a coward, and it’s pretty smart (despite the use of applied phlebotinum and the ending being a bit weak).

Eugh, I know he can be good, but I am still grumpy about Edge of Tomorrow (have seen ads, not the movie yet). I do not like him, and I want to watch all the sci fi movies! Without Tom Cruise, kthx.

I’ve managed to see only one Tom Cruise movie, I think – Born on the 4th of July.

I only watched it ‘cos he sported a moustache and long hair in it.

Kitties and drawers and knocking things down: Mads loves trying to get into my chest of drawers, and she’s anything but little. Today she managed to knock yarn, safety pins and scissors off the table where I was working, all with the power of the mighty swishing tail. I think she was peeved ‘cos I wouldn’t stand in the bedroom watching her make up to my walking sticks (she has a thing for the rubber stoppers). It’s perishing cold in the bedroom, but oh no, I was failing in my duty as a hoomin!

She’s now sitting on her scratching tower behind the couch, with SULK written all over her.

Kittehserf,
Awww, cute!
Two of my cats have extra toes. Right now one has found a bead and she’s picking it up with her tiny kitty-thumbs and rolling it up and down the hall. Most cats bat at things. These two pick them up. It’s darling.

I love Hemingway cats! One of my childhood cats, Clio was a polydactyl. She was a gorgeous cream tabby with sage colored eyes. She used to stare at herself in the mirror and could catch flies. She also kicked the ass of the mean neighborhood German shepherd who had chased our cat (my special guy Whiskers) up a tree. I miss her. She was awesome.

I love polydactyl cats too! I’ve only seen them in pictures, never in real life.

Lea, it sounds like your kitties have reached the CATS WITH OPPOSABLE THUMBS stage of evolution.

Humans, your doom is at hand.

Kitteh,
Once they figure out doorknobs, it’s all over.

Actually, we have to keep their nails trimmed or else they’ll grow into their paws. They may let us live just to keep giving them mani-pedis.

Posted a “better” Cravendale cat video to the Vox Day thread. Instead of double-posting, I thought I would just mention.

Ugh. I post on a GoT fan site under the same name and some just troll named hirself Lick My Ass WeirwoodTreeHugger to make a post disagreeing with me about something asinine.

Wtf is wrong with people? I find that soooo creepy.

wwth, gods, what a loser that guy is. He might as well have called himself Showing His Ass, it’s all he accomplished.

Lea – they’ll probably let us live for this, too:

Lex-man: the idea that you would try and minimise travel time for safety just seems odd to me.

I’m going to guess you’ve never been stalked. I have (twice; both with violence involved, and both with some problems of being in a situation where my movements were moderately constrained, and semi-known/predictable). I did a lot of changing my travel/locational habits (insofar as I was able) to avoid my stalkers.

Because safety trumps lots of things.

LBT: Re chumbawumba: Did you know about the Thatcher’s Dead single they released (could only be bought by subscription, before she died). By some wierd set of quirks they sent me three. I’ve not opened any of them. Still sealed in the packets, with stamps, customs forms and (becaus of customs forms) three different autographs.

All addressed to me. I wonder if someday they will be worth more than the £5 it cost me to get all three.

I’ve finished my circular coat! Didn’t take long at all – 19 days.

Omigosh, that is *magnificent*. And just in time for the cold bite of winter. ๐Ÿ™‚ I have 4 things on the go, I’ll post photos as I get them finished.

But revel (ravel? LOL) in your cleverness. ๐Ÿ™‚

::blushes:: Thank you, pallygirl!

Are you having a really cold winter this year, too? It’s been sharp here, so far – going down to 5 or so overnight, often enough.

Holy crap, I just read how quickly you knitted it, 19 days – do you knit continental?

I think it’s cold, we live in a valley, and we’ve had the woodburner going for about a month now. But we’re silly people who think you should have your house warm enough that you can be in a t-shirt and shorts in the middle of winter.

Overnight lows here are dipping below 10C, excluding wind chill factor. So not as cold as you yet. But the days aren’t getting much over 16C either. Coldest days yet to come, although the weather forecasters say that this winter is going to be mild because ?El Nina?

kittehserf

Oh, I thought we were heading for an El Nino period! Much I know. ๐Ÿ˜›

It’s around 16 – 18C here during the day, with a few that’ve only squeaked up to 14C, and we’ve had lots of rain. Everything’s really green, the lawns around here are just bursting out all over, lol.

I knit English style, never tried Contintental. The thing with that jacket is it’s the most basic pattern you could imagine – the frill, well, that’s just 12′ in moss, then stocking stitch on circulars. Once you start reducing, well, it’s not long to do.

I do wish I’d made the sleeves a wee bit shorter. 18″ before you start shaping the cap is a bit long.
