Starting Monday, Google will be replacing Street View with Deep Dream View

Hoping to capitalize on the popularity of its Deep Dream neural network software, Google has announced that starting on Monday it will fold Google Street View into the Deep Dream project. “All images now up on Google Street View will now be processed using Deep Dream,” Google spokeswoman Florilla Panganaban explained. “Deep Dream Street View will allow users to see how many Slugdogs they may encounter in any neighborhood they plan to visit.”

Here are some examples of what to expect when Google makes the big change.

NOTE: Nothing in this post is actually true. BUT THE SLUGDOGS ARE REAL. ALL TOO HORRIFYINGLY REAL. Do note let yourself fall asleep. That is when they come.

Why do yours come out with so much going on, but mine barely get changed at all?

David, I can’t help noticing the proliferation of Deep Dream posts lately. While I’m enjoying them hugely, I hope an intervention is not needed. You can stop at any time, right?

(BTW, I did snort laughing at this post. Very clever.)

What creeps me out is that these are outdoor pics. I start to wonder if reality is what I think it is just because my bio eyes filter it a certain way, and whether slugdog reality isn’t just as real for other beings with other visual setups. And that’s a scary thought.

If you went through the photos used to train these neural networks to identify animal faces, could you find these specific faces? Also, why does every animal seem to have the same pattern on its fur?

What I’m gathering is that Google either has become or was always a Great Old One.

This explains some things.

@SFHC:

It’s a good thing they’re supposed to be unfathomable, otherwise I’d be spending far more time than I should trying to comprehend that image.

(The kicker is that the arms, wings, and tentacles are still somewhat recognizable.)

Nooooooooooooo! You gotta take a left at the angry furry purple eyeball with ONE hoof, not three! Look at Google Deep Dream View AGAIN! See you when you get here.

I’m dying of laughter. Thanks for this.

What I don’t understand is, why dogs? Wasn’t this thing taught using pics on the Internet? Isn’t the Internet mostly for cats?

I’ve heard that, despite appearances, there are actually more dog pictures on the internet than cat pictures. But I don’t know that I believe it.

Deep dream can be trained on any set of pics. The filter they made public was trained on a set of pics full of eyes and dogs. I’ve been using a site that uses that filter and a few others that are similarly weird and psychedelic. People running the software on their own computers can train it on their own pics.

It’s object recognition software being used in a deliberately “wrong” way.

I’ve got one more silly deep dream post in the works, but Im not turning this into a deep dream blog or anything.

It’s okay David. When you feel ready to quit we’ll all be here to support you. YOU CAN DO IT.

All I ever see is dogs, every time someone makes one of these. It’s gotten boring and old, real fast, even by internet standards

Long time reader, first time commenter. But just wanted to say this Deep Dream thing is actually really freaking me out. I would be obliged if there were fewer posts on this subject in the future. Sorry to rain on everyone’s parade but it’s really unpleasant to even glimpse as I try to scroll past the pictures.

It’s an Onion, but David hasn’t peeled all the layers yet. What will he find at the center?

There’s nothing stopping Google actually doing this. DeepDream is so popular that the management algorithm will probably instruct Larry Page and co to rerender all images. We’ll all love it then the DeepDream will google Google iteself, and some dogs will emerge actually out your computer.
