Open Thread for discussion of terror attacks in Paris

Paris tonight
Paris tonight

There have been multiple terror attacks in Paris. As I write this, there are reportedly dozens dead, and hostages being held.

I hope all WHTM readers in Paris are safe, and that this nightmare doesn’t get any worse.

This is a NO TROLLS/NO MRAs thread.

“BMFTV: According to French officials, gunmen are still at large in Paris attacks. Five suspected attackers have been “neutralized.” Watch live on CNNgo. “

Parisians are using Twitter to help those still in the streets to come inside to safety:

Apologies if that has been posted, but it all but affirms that it was meant to target progressive areas and in turn will strengthen the National Front, hell if they play their cards right it could easily get them into many positions of power by playing on the rage of this series of incidents. An absolutely revolting tactic, but I don’t doubt its potential effectiveness in these trying times.

@Pandapool – I haven’t seen anything in the news so far about attacks in Japan. They did just suffer an offshore earthquake and are at risk of tsunami, though.

Can’t sleep, it all feels so hopeless.

I can’t understand the differences in people; some people spend their lives trying to save the world whilst others spend every day trying to set it on fire.

Ikeke35 put it much more eloquently than I could, but Mammotheers, please keep safe and well.

elb, I’m so sorry it must all be so dreadful for you, but I am glad you felt you could write about it here. I’m sending you all my very best wishes from the UK for you and your loved ones, I will be thinking of you, take good care.

@Kat
Thank you, dear. He lives in eastern germany, in a neighbourhood FULL with muslims, with a refugee center literally by his side. I had my tiny panic attack but i’m calmer now. I don’t even know if my fear is justified or not. Do you all think he should stay in someone else’s home for a while, or avoid catching the metro?

While possible, it sounds like speculation….

@elb, TheMusibaker, Moocow, Anfenwick, everyone, really.

My heart goes out to you. This is horrifying. I know that you’ll stay strong – the French are like that – but that doesn’t change how terrible all of this is. Stay safe.

epitome of incomprehensibility

This is so horrible. I can’t imagine what the victims and witnesses are going through. I hope the attacks are finally over.

@Pandapool – hedin mentioned it on the last page, noting that the Paris attacks are getting much more publicity – most likely because of a bias towards white-majority countries, maybe because of where media infrastructure is located – maybe those are connected, too?

Anyway it’s all horrible and I hope that it won’t lead to more violence by other terrorist groups or by governments of any country.

This is the only discussion thread I’ve seen that mentions the Lebanese attacks as well and isn’t bursting with Islamophobic garbage. Just…thank you David & mods for providing a space to discuss this without shit-flinging by bigots.

Apparently there have been terrorist attacks in Baghdad and Beirut.

An earthquake (7.0) off the southern coast of Japan. They are on tsunami alert and an earthquake in Mexico tonight as well.

WTF?

Yes, no attack in Japan, at least according to brazilian media. It was an earthquake.
I am not supertitious, but guess I’ll be afraid of Fridays the 13ths now.

Elb:

I hope that you and yours stay safe. It is not selfish to think of yourself right now. I am so sorry for everyone that is in the middle of this.

Niara8:

I hope for good news about your father’s scan. Waiting on results like those is a horrible experience.

Omg, yes. I will need this year refunded. I thought 2014 was bad, but, wow, can’t we just have it back?

@raysa

Thanks. He’s having his scan the day before Thanksgiving, so we have just over 10 days to wait. His family history is on his side against it being cancer, as is the oncologist’s opinion (“it doesn’t really look like cancer”). In the meantime, he’s telling himself that the worst part is that it cuts into his pie-making time.

Only got the guts to read your comment now. You are going to be fine. Your family is going to be fine. Your country is strong. Your people are strong. You will survive this one too, and rise even stronger. You will see. I advise you to turn off the news and just turn on a channel with silly things. Keep your phone near, take deep breaths, and you will see everyone you love will be fine in the morning.
I have never been in your situation, but this is how my therapist told me to act in panic attacks. I hope this helps. If it doesn’t, I can only offer a strong, virtual hug.

I am agnostic/atheist (I don’t think there is any god but maybe there is), but I will pray for you all, especially elb. I may go to the church tomorrow, even, if this brings any comfort for you. Most I can do. Wish I had thousands of kilometers long arms to hug you all, wish I could have strong words to make you feel hopeful and calm.

@skiriki
Seconded.

Started the year with a lingering cold that put me way behind schedule for everything. A month ago strained back training and am recovering from a mild disk herniation. Now all this terrorist crap. I’m sure it’s just confirmation bias, but it sure does FEEL like we need a redo.
