Burn de coal, pay de toll: Vox Day mocks white woman allegedly killed by black boyfriend

In case you had forgotten that Vox Day, fantasy author and “SJW’-hater, was a gigantic freaking racist, here’s a little reminder.

On his Alpha Game blog earlier this week, Day — real name Theodore Beale — offered his thoughts on the alleged murder of a Maryland woman by her boyfriend. The dead woman was white, and her boyfriend, now charged with murder, is black, leading Day to conclude, in his words:

Burn de coal, pay de toll

“Coalburner” is incredibly racist slang for a white woman who dates black men. It’s a synonym for “mudshark,” another bit of incredibly racist slang that Vox manages to work into his brief post, once in the title and a second time in this lovely paragraph:

I find it interesting that increasingly, in the case of these mudshark murders, the media is beginning to avoid showing pictures of the black murderer with the white victim. I suppose it puts a rather negative capstone on all those happy multiracial commercials they are showing these days.

Huh. White men kill white women all the time, but no one ever suggests that this is somehow a “negative capstone on all those happy white commercials” that have been on television from the start.

Naturally, Vox’s commenters offered thoughtful analyses of their own. A sampling:

Laguna Beach Fogey said... hahaha stupid bitch June 28, 2016 at 8:29 PM Deaths Head said... Does this mean he passed her shit test or that he failed it? She wanted drama, she got it, so was she finally happy? I wonder, did she finally find that elusive "suitable man" women keep looking for? As a white male, should I confess to this or just embrace my white guilt for not being a real man? So many questions...... June 28, 2016 at 8:54 PM

Just another day in the life of Vox Day, defender of civilization against the barbarians.

The toxic masculinity rule book states that a man of my race dating a woman of another race is “conquering territory” that “belongs” to the other race, but the woman of my race who dates a man of another race is “surrendering territory” that “belongs” to my race. The same mutatis mutandis for class, nationality, religion etc.

Woah, woah guys, how did we get to ‘Vox being a d*** to a white woman who was killed by a black man’ to jumping on the ‘religion vs athiest train’?

@brian – hah, no, although that would certainly clear up our overpopulation problem in short (and horrifying) order.

Based on demographics I would expect 1 in 8 serial killers to be black.

I’ve probably said this before, but… Vox claims to be a Christian. I’m an atheist, and usually it pisses me off when other atheists try to say who is and who isn’t a Christian – it’s not a distinction they should get to make. But for me Vox is the exception to that rule. From everything I’ve read, he’s not a real Christian; he sounds like a man who has actively chosen evil.

You must be hanging out in very different circles from me, because the “that nasty person isn’t a REAL Christian” stories always come at me from Christians who don’t want Christianity associated with the terrible people who claim that identity. If atheists are policing who gets to call themselves a Christian, it isn’t happening where I can see/hear it. I don’t understand the motive for an atheist to do that, either.

For instance, I don’t understand your motive for defending the honor of Christianity here.

Lest anyone thinks I’m going into smug atheist mode, I acknowledge that there are also lots of atheists who think being an atheist automatically makes you really rational and intelligent. No need to research and topic and actually be correct about it.

    Far too true.

@Alan: I was part of a loooooong thread on Outpost Gallifrey mocking the views of the person who first posited the whole Doctor Who Gay Agenda thing, and although he doggedly stuck to his guns he could never answer the question that even if RTD did have a Gay Agenda, why that should be a bad thing? (the fact that much of his proof rested in the episodes written by Steven Moffat only added to the cognitive dissonance on display).

Anyone can claim position to any religious belief. Until a literal physical god is gonna do a global q and a to everyone on the planet, thus showing verifiable proof that x version of said god exists as much as gravity and magnetic force, and tells a person they aren’t x believer, believe what you wish.

I have a theory that the same racial stereotypes have remained largely intact and so has widespread belief that they are valid. What has changed is mainstream opinion about how negative or positive the different racial attributes are. Being a law abiding, solid citizen is now more negative (i.e. dull, square, sexually repressed, mediocre, etc) while criminality, drug use and promiscuity are ‘edgy’,’cool’ even creative. Etc. etc. The apparent progress can be rolled back at any time, as we see every now and then.

I don’t understand the motive for an atheist to do that, either

It makes it easier to ‘pwn’ various religions if there is a ‘real’ one. Christianity is this, Islam is that. TFoot and Sam Harris are big boosters of such nonsense. They don’t come out and say ‘Islam is hideous, so all Muslims are hideous, therefore non hideous Muslims aren’t really, properly Muslim’, but the subtext isn’t particularly subtle. I’ve heard that, for lack of a better term, Reform Christians are doing Christianity wrong for not stoning gays or whatevs. From both Westboro and Logicbros in TAA comment sections

Some of the faith policing is done tongue in cheek, as a way to get homophobes off their high horse. Awesome! Some of it, tho, is angry atheist assholes (#notallatheists) with a need to feel superior to the religious pigeonholing adherents into the worst kinda caricatures. Tedious and unhelpful

Well, yeah, people can claim whatever identity they wish.

But if someone who claims to be a vegan then sits down and eats a huge, medium-rare steak in front of me, I might give that label of theirs a bit of a side-eye.

Or if someone who claims to be a feminist then makes an argument about how women shouldn’t vote or work outside the home, I might give that label a bit of a side-eye.

And if someone who claims to be a Christian ignores pretty much all the commandments put down by Jesus, I might give that label a bit of a side-eye. …Unfortunately, this seems to apply to the vast majority of people who claim to be Christian, at least as far as I’ve come across.

    @Policy of Madness

I’ve seen atheists (especially antitheist atheists) who try to claim that Christians have to believe certain things (typically things that line up with fundamentalist interpretations of the Bible) and Christians who don’t agree with that interpretation of the Bible don’t really understand Christianity and that may be what they are referring to because claiming that someone isn’t a true christian if they are a nasty person is not really something that I’ve seen atheists say either

I can’t remember where I saw this link posted — it may well have been here — but Tim Wise did a pretty solid statistical debunking of white supremacist claims about the rates of black on white crime versus white on black crime: Nazis can’t do Math: Reflections on Racism, Crime, and the Illiteracy of Right-Wing Statistical Analysis

    It’s an interesting read.

So, using 2010 data, and applying the rates of interracial encounter noted above (3 percent and 57 percent), this means:

Of 4,765 victims of black killers, random chance would have predicted 2,716 white victims (4,765 x .57); and,

Of 3,896 victims of white killers, random chance would have predicted 117 black victims (3,896 x .03).

    …

Meaning that in 2010, black-on-white homicide happened only 26 percent as often as random chance would have predicted, and the ratio of black-on-white to white-on-black homicide was only one-fourteenth as large as should have been expected!

Even ignoring rates of encounter: In 2010, 1 in 277,000 white people were killed by a black person; while 1 in 100,000 black people were killed by a white person.

Taking into account rates of encounter, and putting the bolded part of the quote into other words: in 2010, black people murdered white people at a rate that was roughly one-quarter of what would be expected by random chance; while white people murdered black people at a rate that was roughly 3.5 times what would have been expected.

Way to STEM, assholes. Much logic.

From what I’ve witnessed personally, the most right wing fundamentalist bullies (and this applies very well to both Christians, Muslims and even quite a few Jews) is they like to push very literal and selective scriptures to defend their often political standpoints. In most cases, they do not even believe this stuff themselves, but their power comes from forcing other people to believe it. Look at somebody like Ted Haggard for example, a man who was the spiritual advisor to Dubya Bush, defended ‘christian family values’, and then cheated on his wife with male prostitutes.

I think it’s the claim part that’s the issue… the people like this also tend to be the ones loudest about their official religion, whereas the ones who actually follow the teachings tend to be a lot quieter about it and actually do the work. There are a lot of them, they just tend not to infest comment sections with loud brayings about the right way to do things.

Of course, one of the teachings ignored by the louder ones would be Matthew 6:5. “And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men…”

(Granted, I’m Canadian. Religion tends to be one of those ‘not mentioned in polite company’ sorts of things.)
